PARENTAL RESPONSIBILITY AND COURSE INTRODUCTION FOR 38 HOUR CLASS

The parent or guardian will be required to sign a form stating you read and understood this information. You will also be required to sign a form for the policies and terms on the About Us page.

ATTENTION PRICE INCREASE

The price increase will begin when every you register for a class that takes place September 1, 2023, and thereafter. The new prices will be as follows:

Classroom Fee for ages 15 and 16 $275.00

Behind the Wheel Fee $300.00

Total Course Fee $575.00

Total Fees for age 17, including Road Skills Test $640.00

PRICES IN THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION WILL CHANGE AFTER ALL STUDENT HAVE REGISTERED FOR THE AUGUST CLASSES ONLY.

Parent’s must meet with personnel before the beginning of the 38-Hour Driver Education Class.  They must sign to verify they read and understood this information. This class consist of 30 hours of classroom the cost is $275, and 8 hours of instructional drives, the cost is $300.00.  The total fees for the class are $575.00. Total fees for students that are 17 are $640.00. This includes the Road Skills Test that they take upon completion of their 8 hours of behind the wheel instruction. Payable at registration by cash app, cash, check, money order or credit card. The total fees must be paid in full before the behind the wheel instructional drives can begin.  The fees cover the 38 hours of instruction, all materials and use of the driver’s education vehicle. We will use the Policies and Terms to see if any other fees must be paid before the certificate of completion is given. If fees are accessed, they will have to be paid before you will receive your paperwork. 

1.   If a child is 15-17, or 14 years nine month (by the year, month, and day of their birthday for classroom only), they can register to take a 38-hour class. You will need to bring the TIP card, Louisiana ID or birth certificate, social security card, and a picture ID. The parent must sign through each phase of registration and licensing.

2.   The parent and student will have to make an appointment at the Office of Motor Vehicles to get the Temporary Instruction Permit card. You will need a birth certificate, SS#, and picture ID. The card is needed the day before the final exam, for each drive, and for the Road Skills Test (has to be scheduled and pay the $60.00 fee) if you are 17. The Road Skills Test also has to be scheduled, the cost is $60.00, for students that are 16 and has had their learners permit for 6 months.

3.   If you are the legal guardian, you must supply documentation as proof.

4.   If the custodial parent’s last name on the birth certificate is different from the child’s last name, you will need to verify that you are the child’s parent.

5.   Students must be 15 to begin their behind the wheel instruction.

6.   Classroom studies are Monday through Friday and may include a Saturday class.  Fall, winter, and spring classes are in the afternoon from 4 to 7 PM for two weeks. Some classe will be five Saturdays. Testing may be by assigned dates because they are done on computers only. Summer, school breaks and holidays classes are 9-12 and 12:30-3:30 for one week or 9:00- 4:30, Lunch is 12:00-12:30.

Students must be present and on time day each day for class and drives. State law does not allow us to assign make-up work to be completed at home. Classroom studies will proceed by each chapter in the Louisiana Driver’s Guide. This will include reading of material, writing, discussing the answers in the study guide and taking a five-question quiz. Nine quiz will be given, and the student average score must be 80%. Any quiz that is failed the student will have to take over. We also have other resources that are used to aid in the understanding of the materials. They should use their notes to study at home and read the materials in the driver’s guide at www.expresslane.org, drivers, driver’s education and guides, adult or minor driver education and Class D and E Driver’s guide.

On the last day of class, the student will be given the Knowledge Skills Test from Office of Motor Vehicles. 

There are 40 questions on the test and the students can pass if their score is 80%. They can only have 8 incorrect questions. If the student fails the final exam, they shall be allowed to retest once the same day. If the student does not pass the test on the second attempt, the student may return and retest twice each scheduled day until the test is passed. After the student has come in two sessions to retest, a $50.00 fee will be charged per session.

 Use of electronic devices during class or while testing is not allowed. Students may not leave the classroom during the final examination. Students should not use cellphones during class time. If it is an emergency the student may move outside to use the cell phone. If the student uses the cellphone while testing that is considered cheating. If a student is caught cheating in any manner that student shall be dismissed from the class and a refund will not be issued.

The supervisor of driving instructors will contact you to see when the student is available for their drives.  They will create a schedule for the student and notify you of their drives. The student must have their TIP card for each drive and the Road Skills Test. We will review the card for any restriction and the student must follow the restriction for each drive. If a drive is missed it will be reassigned. They are graded on the last drive. To pass they must obtain a score of 70%.  If this test is failed A driving school has the right to recommend a learner’s permit regardless of age. 

The eight hours behind the wheel course must be completed within 120 days of the classroom instruction. Where the student will begin and end their drive will be determined by the driving instructor.

Classroom breaks will be given after 45 minutes of instruction. The students may bring food and beverages but must clean up their area daily.

We have guidelines from the state that must be adhered to because of COVID-19.

1.   We will practice social distancing.

2.   We encourage you to wear a mask. Tissue and hand sanitizer are provided.

3.   We should be notified if you are showing signs of being ill, recovering from COVID-19 or are Quarantined because of exposure.

4.   Please wash hands with soap and water, after using the restroom and if you cough or sneeze into your hands.

5.   Restrain from touching your hair, eyes, nose, and mouth. If you do touch these areas wash your hands with soap and water.

The Road Skills Test must be taken to receive your intermediate license at 16 and having had your learners permit for six months or full license privileges at 17. You can make an appointment with the supervisor of driving instruction. The cost is $60.00. This test is not a part of the 38-hour class or class payment.

Through each phase of the licensing process the parent or guardian and student has paperwork that they both have to sign, at OMV and the driving schools.

 

 

 

STAGE 1: LEARNER’S PERMIT

1. Must be a minimum of fifteen (15) years of age.

2. Must complete thirty (30) hours classroom instruction and eight (8) hours behind-the-wheel driving instruction.

3. Is authorized to drive only with a licensed adult at least twenty-one (21) years of age or sibling at least eighteen (18) years of age.

5. Must maintain learner’s license for a minimum of one hundred eighty (180) days and cannot advance to intermediate stage until attainment of sixteenth (16th) birthday.

Note: Upgrading from Permit to Intermediate (age 16):

Effective January 1, 2011, no applicant shall be issued a Class "E" intermediate license unless a signed statement by the parent or legal guardian is provided to the department attesting that the applicant has a minimum of fifty (50) hours of behind-the-wheel driving experience with a licensed parent, guardian, or adult at least twenty-one (21) years of age. At least fifteen (15) of these hours must be nighttime driving.

 

 

 

STAGE 2: INTERMEDIATE LICENSE

1. Must have completed STAGE 1.

2. Must be a minimum of sixteen (16) years of age.

3. Must pass the road skills driving test with at least 80% accuracy.

4. Is prohibited from driving between the hours of 11:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m., unless accompanied by a licensed adult at least twenty-one (21) years of age or sibling at least eighteen (18) years of age. Additionally, between the hours of 6:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m., an intermediate licensee may not transport more than one passenger under the age of twenty-one (21) years of age that is not a member of the immediate family.

5. Must be maintained until seventeenth (17th) birthday.

 

STAGE 3: FULL LICENSE

1. Must successfully complete STAGES 1 AND 2 OR

2. Must be at least seventeen (17) years of age prior to application for first license
